Player props explained
A player prop is a bet on one player's stat in one game, such as points, rebounds, passing yards or receptions.
How a prop is priced
| Player | Stat | Line | Over | Under |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Player A | Points | 24.5 | -115 | -105 |
Over 24.5 wins with 25 or more points. The half point means no push. The two prices are not equal: the more expensive side is the one the book expects to be more popular or more likely.
Types of props
- Single stat: points, rebounds, assists, three-pointers, passing yards, rushing yards, receptions.
- Combined stats: points + rebounds + assists (PRA) and similar combos.
- Alternate lines: other numbers at different prices, for example over 29.5 points at +180.
- Milestones and touchdowns: anytime touchdown, double-double.
If the player does not play
Rules differ by sportsbook. At many books a bet is voided if the player does not play, at others it loses if he is listed active. Read the house rules before you bet.
Props carry more margin
Props are priced with larger margins than sides and totals, often 6% to 8%. We measured it by book: which sportsbook charges the most vig.
